Phoenix at Corona Capital in Mexico City had that perfect festival glow: bright, stylish, effortless, and just a little bit euphoric.
Shot for Live4ever Media, this gallery captures Phoenix bringing their sharp, polished indie-pop energy to Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez on November 17, 2023. There is something so specific about the way this band moves live. Everything feels clean and beautifully controlled, but never cold. The songs are precise, the lights are big, and Thomas Mars has that rare ability to make a festival set feel both huge and strangely personal.
The Corona Capital setlist opened with “Lisztomania” and moved through “Entertainment,” “Lasso,” “Too Young / Girlfriend,” “Alpha Zulu,” “Ti Amo,” “After Midnight,” “Armistice,” “Love Like a Sunset Part I,” “Love Like a Sunset Part II,” “Sunskrupt!,” “If I Ever Feel Better / Funky Squaredance,” “Tonight,” “Rome,” and “Trying to Be Cool / Drakkar Noir.”
One of the best moments of the set came when Mexican singer León Larregui of Zoé joined Phoenix for “Artefact,” the bilingual collaboration they had released just days before Corona Capital. It gave the night a very specific Mexico City charge: Phoenix already had the crowd, but bringing León out made the whole thing feel more local, more electric, and much more memorable.
I have a lot of images from that moment, and they are some of my favourites from the set. Thomas Mars and León Larregui together on stage at Corona Capital felt like exactly the kind of surprise festival moment you hope for when you are photographing a show like this.
The set closed with “1901” and “Identical (Reprise),” with Thomas Mars heading into the crowd near the end. By that point, the whole thing had that classic festival feeling: everyone singing, everything lit up, and a band that knows exactly how to make a crowd feel like they are inside the same bright little world for a while.
